SAGINAW, Alabama – Last month, the Carmeuse Longview Operation Mine Rescue Team headed to Havana, Florida for the 6th annual Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition. Twelve teams from Florida, Alabama, West Virginia and Tennessee participated in training sessions and a competition at the Florida Public Safety Institute.
By the end of the competition, the Carmeuse Longview team earned the title of Overall Grand Champion, after winning 1st Place for Day 1 Field Competition, 2nd Place for Day 2 Field Competition, and 2nd Place First Aid.
“We are so proud of our mine rescue team and all the hard work they put in to making sure Longview is a safe environment for us all,” said the Carmeuse Longview Operation’s human resources generalist, Sybil Owens.
Mine rescue teams must undergo extensive training to effectively respond to mine emergencies, due to the unique hazards that could be faced on-site. Events like the conference and competition provide an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and hone these critical skills. Longview's team comprised of Jeffery L Adams, Jeffery O Adams, Reggie Brown, Chris Harris, Tonya Tolbert, Charles Vansant and Bobby Watley (Captain).
